Fab Festival

The Fab Festival will be held at Disseny Hub Barcelona (DHUB) and will be open to the public during the weekend of the 5th and 6th of July. It will gather members of the International Fab Lab Community, together with the innovative local community and the general public. Members of local groups will hold creative workshops, conferences and events for all ages.

        La Asociación Española de Rapid Manufacturing (ASERM) se constituyó en julio de 2004 con el objetivo de ser un punto de encuentro de los principales agentes que actúan en este campo, ya sean empresas mercantiles, centros tecnológicos, centros de investigación, universidades, centros de formación, así como otros agentes del sistema que promueven la innovación en España.

        ASERM entiende el Rapid Manufacturing (RM) como el conjunto de técnicas, tecnologías y métodos que permiten la fabricación rápida, flexible y competitiva de piezas –ya sean prototipos, utillajes o productos finales – directamente a partir de información electrónica. Estas tecnologías, hasta ahora desarrolladas en otros países han sido el eje de mejora de la cadena de desarrollo y de la productividad de las empresas españolas y una base para el desarrollo de nuevo conocimiento para el resto de agentes del sistema de Innovación Español.

        Los principales ejes de actuación de ASERM se centran en la investigación y el desarrollo tecnológico (proyectos conjuntos), la transferencia de tecnología (formación, implantaciones piloto en empresas) y en la promoción del conocimiento (jornadas técnicas, grupos de trabajo) desde un planteamiento colaborativo –a nivel nacional e internacional- y aprovechando de la forma más eficiente posible los recursos y las sinergias existentes.

        Los miembros de ASERM cubren todo el espectro de tecnologías de Rapid Manufacturing, tales como la fabricación por capas con materiales diversos (SLA, SLS, DMLS, SLM, FDM, EBM, LOM,…), tecnologías avanzadas de mecanizado (UHSM, erosión por láser,...), conformado incremental (deformación metálica sin matriz,...) y conformado near-net-shape (LENS, electroforming, spray forming, TriCLAM,…). La Asociación cuenta con numerosos socios que actúan como colaboradores de ASERM, siendo los eslabones fundamentales para la ejecución práctica de proyectos.

        El Centro Tecnológico Ascamm es un referente internacional en el ámbito de las tecnologías industriales. En el centro trabajan 150 personas en el desarrollo de conocimiento y tecnología industrial para asentar las bases de una reindustrialización sostenible de Europa promoviendo proyectos innovadores y la participación en los mismos de empresas de diversos sectores como: automoción (incl. Movilidad Eléctrica), aeronáutica , ferroviario, dispositivos médicos, equipamiento industrial, construcción e industrias transformadoras plásticas y metálicas, etc.
        Ascamm es una fundación privada sin ánimo de lucro que realiza actividades de investigación aplicada con una actividad especialmente destacada en el desarrollo de tecnología de proceso en el ámbito del llamado Advanced Manufacturing.
        La actividad en el ámbito de la fabricación aditiva se inició en 1995, año en el que Ascamm empezó a adquirir tecnología para ofrecer servicios tecnológicos a sus empresas clientes y que le permitió desarrollar conocimiento e involucrarse en proyectos de investigación de ámbito internacional. Esto permitió al Centro detectar nuevas oportunidades de aplicación de la tecnología y medir y evaluar cuáles eran las barreras tecnológicas que imposibilitaban la introducción de las tecnologías existentes en el mercado. Hace más de 5 años Ascamm reorientó su actividad y se centró en el desarrollo de tecnología propia, fruto de esta estrategia se han desarrollado dos tecnologías en el ámbito de la impresión 3D que se encuentran adecuadamente protegidas

En el departamento de I+D se investiga como mejorar el rendimiento del hardware libre así como la experiencia de los usuarios. Por ejemplo, recientemente BCN Dynamics ha publicado un diseño mejorado de la impresora 3D Prusa Mendel que se ha bautizado como Mendel Dynamics.
        En la tienda de Barcelona Dynamics se encuentran productos de hardware libre como impresoras 3D, electrónica arduino y otros componentes. En la página web, por otra parte, se informa detalladamente no solo de los productos que comercializa la empresa sino también de todos aquellos temas que pueden contribuir a divulgar la fabricación digital 3D, además de impulsar foros sobre el montaje de impresoras 3D.
        Barcelona Dynamics es la división de nuevas tecnologías de Cablysa Sistemas, S.L., sociedad fundada en el año 2001,especializada en el suministro de clavijas inyectadas para fabricantes de electrodomésticos y aparatos eléctricos. Las clavijas son mayoritariamente elaboradas en un Centro Especial de Trabajo para personas con discapacitades psíquicas, colaborando de este modo en la integración social de este colectivo.

        Digitally fabricated objects for the city: showcase Berlin

        The design collaborative Susana Karrasch (soyous.org) and Claudia Dressler (morgen architects)
        realized a Project in Berlin that show perfectly the workflow from digital design,
        through prototyping to the real implementation in urban space in 1:1 scale.

        We are talking about a Sculpture, a canopy with the functionality of an extraordinary entrance situation
        for the refurnished modernist building created by the Dadaist Artist and Architect August Endell in 1913.
        The Sculpture is a complex geometry that seeks to combine the Modernist idea of the last century with a contemporary interpretation
        to 2013 - exactly 100 years later, applying digital techniques at all stages of design, production and parametric adaptation,
        until the final setup at the Autograph Hotel am Steinplatz by Marriott.

        The fundamental idea of the final shape is derived from the decorative and geometric elements and design language
        of the original expressionistic building. The challenge of the form finding process was to
        extract the stylistic logic and combine these into a comprehensive essence through the digital design
        and manufacturing process.

        Nada queda más lejos de nuestras intenciones en el laboratorio de BioDiseño de ADDA, nosotros centramos nuestro interés en observar cómo los organismos biológicos consiguen estructuras emergentes complejas a partir de simples componentes, las estructuras y formas generadas por los sistemas naturales se analizan y se entienden como organizaciones jerárquicas de componentes muy sencillos (desde lo más pequeño a lo más grande) en donde las propiedades que surgen de forma emergente son algo más que la suma de las partes.

        Dispone de departamento propio de investigación, desarrollo e innovación para el diseño y la producción de productos, con tecnología y patentes propias, para el sector de las Ayudas Técnicas a las personas con discapacidad y para los sectores industrial, logístico y energético. Adapta y personaliza sus productos según las necesidades de cada empresa.

        Los tres objetivos básicos de Esclatec son el desarrollo de nuevos productos, que faciliten la vida diaria de las personas; la creación de puestos de trabajo de calidad para un colectivo de personas en situación de exclusión laboral y satisfacer las necesidades de sus empleados y de sus clientes.

        Esclatec colabora con la gestión del Ateneo de fabricación de Les Corts.

El Fab Lab Barcelona coordina el programa Fab Academy a nivel mundial, el cual esta basado en los principios, aplicaciones e implicaciones de la fabricación digital. El Fab Lab Barcelona ha producido proyectos del IAAC como: Hyperhabitat (selección oficial para el XXI Bienal de Venecia) o el Fab Lab House (Premio del público en la primera edición del Solar Decathlon Europe en Madrid).         La Fundación CIM, situada en el Parque Tecnológico de Barcelona, es reconocida como un instituto tecnológico de referencia en el ámbito de las tecnologías de la producción y de desarrollo de producto. Tiene un fuerte vínculo con la Escuela Técnica Superior de Ingeniería Industrial de Barcelona, donde nació en 1990, y obtiene sus recursos realizando actividades de transferencia de tecnología, investigación y formación para el entorno industrial, siendo un caso de el éxito en cuanto al cumplimiento de su misión como difusora e implantadora de nuevas tecnologías .
        Así , incluso se ha posicionado a nivel europeo en tecnologías clave como la fabricación aditiva: las impresoras BCN3D+, que desarrolla su sección ReprapBCN, han tenido recientemente un fuerte impacto mediático y se distribuyen actualmente por todo el mundo. Sus equipos industriales de impresión 3D profesional, por otra parte, dan asistencia a las empresas de nuestro país que apuestan por la innovación . La Fundación CIM , además, ofrece al Ingeniero industrial la posibilidad de complementar su formación académica con cursos de especialización en sistemas CAD, con estudios de Masters y Posgrados profesionales de titulación UPC.
        Sus actividades le han llevado en los últimos años a una intensa presencia internacional, ya sea por convenios de formación por ejemplo con el Tecnológico de Monterrey , para actividades de investigación por ejemplo en mecanización e impresión 3D con cerámica avanzada para prótesis en Italia y Turquía) o para fabricación de equipos de investigación especiales (por ejemplo en Tanzania para un equipo de simulación geológica).

        La empresa catalana Indo ha liderado el proyecto europeo “ Made4U”, consistente en la creación de un sistema único en el mundo en la fabricación de lentes y gafas totalmente personalizadas. En el proyecto intervienen ópticas, fabricantes de lentes y de impresoras 3D de siete países europeos.
        El modelo desarrollado por el equipo de investigación se basa en un escáner tridimensional facial que, en sólo 3 segundos, escanea la morfometría de la cara y captura todos los datos necesarios para personalizar la montura idónea para el usuario. La digitalización permite diseñar el modelo de gafas que mejor se adapta a las necesidades del cliente, mediante una simulación en el ordenador sin necesidad de probar los diferentes modelos de gafas que hay en la óptica para elegir el que mejor se le ajusta y que más se acerca a sus gustos.
        El proyecto ha contemplado especialmente los aspectos relativos a la experiencia del usuario en el proceso de selección, conduciendo a un planteamiento nuevo en esta experiencia de compra. Gracias a un probador virtual, el cliente puede elegir entre los modelos de gafas que ya están redimensionadas y adaptadas a sus necesidades y preferencias. El sistema también calcula las mejores lentes según las necesidades de prescripción y las características de la montura escogida.

        “Made4U” optimiza la cadena de valor de la fabricación y comercialización de lentes y gafas gracias a tecnologías como el 3D printing. Así, el sistema desarrollado abre un nuevo campo de oportunidades y nuevos modelos de negocio para el sector de la óptica. El último paso de "Made4U" es la fabricación de estas monturas personalizadas mediante las impresoras 3D, el proceso que está basado en la sinterización láser, tanto en materiales metálicos como en el titanio o poliméricos (poliamida). Los acabados y decoraciones de las monturas también han sido objeto de la investigación realizada en el proyecto.

        We'll explore your early stage idea, who its for and how you can get it to the next step. We'll show some tools for thinking about your business and methods to get to a clear vision and purpose. We’ll be using design methods and business prototyping to get your idea into a clearly. We’ll explore how the idea could be packaged, who might be the audience for the idea, and methods of getting the product or service to them.

        You'll take your idea and turn it into a proposition to take to the next step.

        Maximum 18 people, or we can talk about doing it at a larger scale depending on the kind of space available.

        Aimed at FabLab participants, early stage startups and social entrepreneurs in and around Barcelona.

        These workshops are designed for makers, designers and creatives who have just recently started up, or are at the point of doing so. It is one of the core Upstarter incubator workshops aimed at supporting makers and designers to become founders of their own companies.         MID es un estudio de diseño interactivo y tecnología, especializado en ingenieria, diseño de interacción y new media. Está compuesto por un equipo multidisciplinar formado por diseñadores, ingenieros, artistas y programadores. En la práctica, esta combinación de creatividad multidisplinar e I+D permite diseñar y ejecutar proyectos singulares a lo largo de cada fase del proyecto. Fieles a la metodologia ad hoc, a partir de las necesidades del contenido, MID desarrolla la tecnología hardware y software adaptada a cada proyecto.
        El proyecto más reciente del estudio es BHOREAL, una interfaz de código abierto basada en la plataforma Arduino que permite controlar todo tipo de software y hardware mediante una superficie con pulsadores retroiluminados por LEDs RGB, que desarrollada usando técnicas de fabricación digital. Se puede utilizar como dispositivo OSC/MIDI para disparar samples en directo, como secuenciador, sintetizador, caja de ritmos, generador de mapas tonales o control remoto. También puede funcionar en modo autónomo como controlador algorítmico y generativo, simulador matemático, interfaz de juego y pantalla de LEDs de baja resolución, entre otras aplicaciones.

        The demonstration will introduce the participants to modern techniques of applying age-old materials to create emergent morphologies that transcend traditional processes. The workshop will focus on the process of spraying natural fiber to create a non-woven textile that can be used to produce anything from building components to ornamental artifacts.
        In case of a full workshop participants will take part in the fabrication process. After introducing them to the process, each participant will be able to fabricate their own object. The possibilities can range from something similar to a lampshade, a piece of clothing, or whatever they see fit.
        Participants will also be provided with their own set of blueprints of the spray tool so that they are capable of further developing the process on their own.

        This workshop is based on the work of: Jean Akanish, Alexander Dolan, Jin Shihui, and Ali yerdel - Stigmergic Fibers conducted for the Digital Tectonics studio at IAAC 2012-2013.

        "The Poppy project (http://www.poppy-project.org) aims at building an Open-source humanoid platform based on robust, flexible, easy-to-use and reproduce hardware and software. In particular, the use of 3D printing and rapid prototyping technologies is a central aspect of this project, and makes it easy and fast not only the reproduction, but also the development of morphological variants.
        Poppy responds first to the scientific objective to study the role of morphol- ogy in cognitive development, in particular for motor control and human-robot interaction. It appears today that a suitable design of a robot morphology can greatly simplify control problems, increase robustness, and open new modes of interaction with the physical and social world. Thus Poppy aims to enable and simplify the experimentation, the reproduction and the modification of the mor- phology in research laboratories. It also allows collaborative working, sharing and replication of the results on these issues between laboratories. The ambition is to become a reference platform for benchmarking and dissemination of scientific results.
        Thanks to its properties, this platform also meets a growing societal need: education and training in technology combining computer science, electronics
        and mechanics, as well as a training tool to the emergent revolutionary 3D printing process. With its openness, its design and its rather lower cost, Poppy provides an object and a unique context for experimentation and learning of these technologies in a Do-It-Yourself (DIY) approach.         Microfluidics and Lab on a chip technology are introduced in high school curriculum in The Netherlands. A team of teachers, technicians and scientists developed an educational Lab on a Chip kit. The kit uses commercial, and partly custom made, glass chips.

        Current research is focused on low-cost substitutions for the glass chips, for educational use, using rapid-prototyping techniques.

        Italian Limes explores the modern notion of 'border' within the context of the most recent technological advancements for spatial representation and the massive consequences of climate change that hit the Alpine ecosystem over the last decades.
        A network of GPS sensors placed on the Similaun glacier, which determines the border between Italy and Austria, transmit the collected data to a drawing machine in Venice Biennale.

        The development of GPS systems, as well as the representation of the collected data in the Biennale, have been developed in cooperation with Fablab Turin.

        An Arduino / Processing framework and some digital production instruments currently available in a FabLab allowed a little team to create working tools to survey and widespread data that are not usually available.

        The project has been awarded with a Special Mention at the 14th International Architecture Exhibition - La Biennale di Venezia, selected among the 41 installations on display at Arsenale's Corderie until November 23rd, 2014.

        Vertical Farming System (V.F.S.) applies to the quite common “blind” facade of a typical hi-rise apartment building in Athens. It works as a modular system with elements of 50x50 cm building a metal structure akin to a scaffold. The system shows great transformative power, functionally and aesthetically, and it may work as a pilot-project self-replicating through the city’s neighborhoods. Depending on scale V.F.S. may be used to grow herbs or vegetables and at the same time turn the ugly grey facades into green oxygen-fueled sanctuaries to biodiversity, long lost in Athens. Since the metal scaffold forms the basis, residents’ groups working together can decide what and where to plant. Recycled or other available material that comes handy may be used to form pots that can be filled with soil and placed drawer-like in selected parts of the grid. The structure is accessed by ramps that apart from their obvious functional use define an architectural promenade by offering new sights and unexpected viewing points all over the city.

        An example of a possible V.F.S. implementation on the terrace of an open-air theater on top of the VOX squat social centre in Exarhia, Athens, was presented at LAEMOS2014 in Havana, (2-5/3/2014).

        This talk explores 'kitchen becomes open,' a project by Valcucine, dotdotdot and Arduino. During the Milan Design Week 2014, Valcucine and dotdotdot, in partnership with Arduino, promoted a Call for Ideas directed to planners, designers, makers, developers and programmers working in the field of design, as well as students and enthusiasts. Everyone met to take part in a shared and collaborative project regarding Meccanica, a kitchen by Valcucine. During the 6 day workshop in Valcucine's store in Brera Milan, the designers worked in close contact with the company and were supported by skilled mentors to develop design suggestions and prototypes of new accessories, structures and interactive digital implementation in line with the mood and philosophy of Meccanica. All prototypes were made using the digital fabrication technologies available at the workshop and released under the Creative Commons BY - NC - SA 4.0 license.

        The results of the workshop were exhibited during the Milan Design Week 2014 in the Brera Design District.

        Bernat Cuni, founder and designer, explains that “when there is a new fabrication method, there also have to be new design methods. Traditionally, fabrication was a privilege reserved for the elite, who had the resources (money, tools, knowledge and power) to build factories and distribution channels.         Robots in Gastronomy is a research and design group focusing on the intersection of technology and gastronomy. The group includes Michelin Star Chefs, Industrial Designers, Interaction Designers, and High End Kitchen Equipment Distributors. The group’s research has culminated in the creation of the Food Form 1, a computer numerically controlled deposition robot capable of 3d printing edible materials.

        Robots in Gastronomy began in 2010 while Chef Paco Morales commissioned new custom dinnerware for his upcoming season. The plates and cups were geometrically complex, and were designed through iteration; each design was tested with its food to ensure the experience was unique. Because of this, the designs were prototyped using 3d plastic printers. This prompted the chef to ask, ‘Why can’t we just print the food?’

        This simple question caused the gravitation of several parties to form Robots in Gastronomy. Since then, the group has experimented with the concept of mass customization and how to provide that in different settings. The aim of the group is not to industrialize the kitchen, conversely, the aim is to provide tools of invention and innovation in the kitchen.

        Following several years of prototyping extrusion systems, Robots in Gastronomy completed work on the first version of the Food Form line of robots called the Food Form 1. The machine allows for the 3d printing of edible materials onto a variety of cooking surfaces such as a frying pan, deep fryer, anti-griddle, algae bath, or even onto a plate. The machine can be customized to custom dimensions or applications and is meant for experimental chefs, catering companies, pastry studios, or molecular gastronomists.

        LABS3D makes scale reproductions of real people. They recreate detailed replicas of actual people, using 3D printing.
        They use scanning and 3D printing technology. “It’s a revolutionary way to capture a moment in your life. A
        family portrait, a group of friends, a birth announcement or any kind of celebration: weddings, baptisms, communions.
        The possibilities are endless,” they affirm in this new studio, located at carrer Ample 12, in the heart of Barcelona.
        Using a scanning system, the details are captured with a high degree of precision. Once this stage is complete, the information is processed, the details are finalized and an exact digital image of the person is created. The next step is to transform the reality into an image through the use of 3D printing. And in a relatively short period of time, the person is immortalized in a figurine.         Stalactite 3D is a young start-up company founded in
        Barcelona. The project was launched by Joan Raventós
        nearly 3 years ago. His idea was to create high-performance
        3D printers that would be easy to use, providing
        high quality at an affordable price.
        For Stalactite 3D, a large part of the design inspiration is
        based on user needs and feedback from 3D printer users
        all over the world.

        Stalactite 102 is the first high-definition desktop stereolithography
        3D printer created at the Stalactite 3D offices.
        As a result of DLP technology and its operating system,
        the machine provides excellent results, similar to the
        major name brands, but at a lower price. It is a highly ergonomic
        and easy-to-use which means that users do not
        need specialized knowledge to calibrate the machine and
        begin printing. The machine’s z-resolution (height) reaches
        25 micrometers (0.025mm) and in the xy-plane it has two
        easily-adjustable resolutions: 100 and 50 micrometers.
        This level of technical quality allows for creating objects
        that could be confused with pieces made with plastic
        injection molding. Stalactite 102 has a printing area of 102,
        4x76, 8 mm on the xy plane and a height of 180 mm (z-axis).
        In addition, the printer can use up to 4 materials with
        different properties.

        ESARQ-UIC offers a teaching method based on design
        work at all scales and an integration of areas of knowledge,
        which ensures training highly competitive professionals
        with a multi-faceted, innovative, committed and
        entrepreneurial profile, who are capable of taken on new
        challenges. The students at ESARQ-UIC have access to
        a complete carpentry workshop supervised by specialized
        technicians, with a spacious area for hand work and
        assembly, in addition to CAD/CAM production tools. The
        workshop was opened in 2000, due to the creation of the
        Genetic Architectures Research Group and the Biodigital
        Architecture Master’s Degree. In the beginning, as the
        first digital manufacturing workshop at a Spanish architecture
        school or institution, it was equipped with a milling
        machine (CNC-AXYZ) and a 3D printer (Thermojet),
        later complemented with a CO2 laster cutter and two
        more 3D printers (ZCorp and Felix-printer), using additive
        layering and heated filament extrusion respectively, which
        are all still functioning to date.
        From the first year and through to the present, the main
        objectives have to do with the application of new digital
        technologies to the production of pieces on a scale of 1:1,
        for direct installation on site, in real architectural designs,
        beyond the creation of molds, models or mock-ups. While
        the importance of the machines is definitive in the creation
        of models, retrospectively the fabrication system
        defines the morphology of the design.

        Wearable technology is the “next big thing” in tech industries. Analysts forecast a consistent growth and this sector is becoming appealing to many corporations. Aim of this chapter is to present the field of wearable technology and to highlight unexplored issues generated by the relation of such technologies with the domain of proprietary versus open source businesses.

        Through the introduction of case studies and scenarios in the field of wearable technologies, the talk will explores some issues at stake when the age of the “frictionless sharing” reaches pervasively our bodies. Rather than depicting the picture of a future Gattaca like society, we, conversely, aim to introduce a reflection on how open hardware, open software and open data, if developed in a coordinated sustainable ecosystem, could become a platform for the creation of alternative businesses wheareas the user empowerment, self-sufficiency and inclusion in decision-making processes are added values brought by the body borne products.

Result is a new concept of fuselage in order to compete in weight with traditional tech and boom 100% 3D printing tech capabilities . Barcelona 3d printed UAV is 1500mm wingspan, 1000mm fuse length and only 845g OEW. Made in my home bathroom with CAD software under student license, 3D printer (740€) and 1 PLA filament coil (19€).

        Slic3r is the tool you need to convert a digital 3D model into printing instructions for your 3D printer. It cuts the model into horizontal slices (layers), generates toolpaths to fill them and calculates the amount of material to be extruded.

        The project was started in 2011 from scratch: the code and the algorithms are not based on any other previous work. Readability and maintainability of the code are among the design goals.

LowHighTech concept is born to highlight this paradoxical closeness and make possible a new approach of technology; aimed at putting in the reach of all; including the poorest strata of society.

        Lowhightech finds its application at the urban scale in “HubCité”, a sort of african "smart city" project mobilizing barcamps and fablabs... Presented initially as an utopia, it is a program of urban renewal in which the actors are people who themselves - can easily take ownership and availability of dedicated spaces through technology to- recover the power to positively transform the city. Indeed, since recent months, we also prototype an innovative business.         Over the last year at fabLAB Asturias we've been developing designs and techniques for making cheap and easy to build RC airplanes and multicopters for our research in fabbable UAV's.
        Using digital fabrication and cheap materials (foamboard, plywood...), you can make small-to-medium scale airplanes (1 to 2m wingspan) able to lift small payloads for photo and video recording, enviromental data gathering, art performances, etc.

        Digital fabrication then makes way for the analogue process, making a silicone mould and pouring the chocolate.

Dozens of prototypes are then exhibited where they can be tested in the real world by thousands of people. Then, we openly share how-to guides and code for every project through our Library so anyone can replicate the prototypes in their own city. Its not just an exercise in fiction, but a powerful means to be able to connect what you are, with what you intend to be.

        Aimed at FabLab participants, early stage startups and social entrepreneurs in and around Barcelona.

        Over the last year at fabLAB Asturias we've been developing designs and techniques for making cheap and easy to build RC airplanes and multicopters for our research in fabbable UAV's.
        Using digital fabrication and cheap materials (foamboard, plywood...), you can make small-to-medium scale airplanes (1 to 2m wingspan) able to lift small payloads for photo and video recording, enviromental data gathering, art performances, etc.
        The workshop will teach the design techniques we use to adapt real airfoils so they can be laser cutted, how to design and build different types of airplanes, and how to connect the electronics and test them.

        For the box, you will see how you can reverse dimensions, turning 3D back into 2D and witness the creative potential of print and cut technology.

        ASERM entiende el Rapid Manufacturing (RM) como el conjunto de técnicas, tecnologías y métodos que permiten la fabricación rápida, flexible y competitiva de piezas –ya sean prototipos, utillajes o productos finales – directamente a partir de información electrónica. Estas tecnologías, hasta ahora desarrolladas en otros países han sido el eje de mejora de la cadena de desarrollo y de la productividad de las empresas españolas y una base para el desarrollo de nuevo conocimiento para el resto de agentes del sistema de Innovación Español.

        Los principales ejes de actuación de ASERM se centran en la investigación y el desarrollo tecnológico (proyectos conjuntos), la transferencia de tecnología (formación, implantaciones piloto en empresas) y en la promoción del conocimiento (jornadas técnicas, grupos de trabajo) desde un planteamiento colaborativo –a nivel nacional e internacional- y aprovechando de la forma más eficiente posible los recursos y las sinergias existentes.

        Los miembros de ASERM cubren todo el espectro de tecnologías de Rapid Manufacturing, tales como la fabricación por capas con materiales diversos (SLA, SLS, DMLS, SLM, FDM, EBM, LOM,…), tecnologías avanzadas de mecanizado (UHSM, erosión por láser,...), conformado incremental (deformación metálica sin matriz,...) y conformado near-net-shape (LENS, electroforming, spray forming, TriCLAM,…).         The design collaborative Susana Karrasch (soyous.org) and Claudia Dressler (morgen architects)
        realized a Project in Berlin that show perfectly the workflow from digital design,
        through prototyping to the real implementation in urban space in 1:1 scale.

        We are talking about a Sculpture, a canopy with the functionality of an extraordinary entrance situation
        for the refurnished modernist building created by the Dadaist Artist and Architect August Endell in 1913.
        The Sculpture is a complex geometry that seeks to combine the Modernist idea of the last century with a contemporary interpretation
        to 2013 - exactly 100 years later, applying digital techniques at all stages of design, production and parametric adaptation,
        until the final setup at the Autograph Hotel am Steinplatz by Marriott.

        The fundamental idea of the final shape is derived from the decorative and geometric elements and design language
        of the original expressionistic building. The challenge of the form finding process was to
        extract the stylistic logic and combine these into a comprehensive essence through the digital design
        and manufacturing process.

        La empresa catalana Indo ha liderado el proyecto europeo “ Made4U”, consistente en la creación de un sistema único en el mundo en la fabricación de lentes y gafas totalmente personalizadas. En el proyecto intervienen ópticas, fabricantes de lentes y de impresoras 3D de siete países europeos.
        El modelo desarrollado por el equipo de investigación se basa en un escáner tridimensional facial que, en sólo 3 segundos, escanea la morfometría de la cara y captura todos los datos necesarios para personalizar la montura idónea para el usuario. La digitalización permite diseñar el modelo de gafas que mejor se adapta a las necesidades del cliente, mediante una simulación en el ordenador sin necesidad de probar los diferentes modelos de gafas que hay en la óptica para elegir el que mejor se le ajusta y que más se acerca a sus gustos.
        El proyecto ha contemplado especialmente los aspectos relativos a la experiencia del usuario en el proceso de selección, conduciendo a un planteamiento nuevo en esta experiencia de compra. Gracias a un probador virtual, el cliente puede elegir entre los modelos de gafas que ya están redimensionadas y adaptadas a sus necesidades y preferencias. El sistema también calcula las mejores lentes según las necesidades de prescripción y las características de la montura escogida.

        “Made4U” optimiza la cadena de valor de la fabricación y comercialización de lentes y gafas gracias a tecnologías como el 3D printing. Así, el sistema desarrollado abre un nuevo campo de oportunidades y nuevos modelos de negocio para el sector de la óptica. El último paso de "Made4U" es la fabricación de estas monturas personalizadas mediante las impresoras 3D, el proceso que está basado en la sinterización láser, tanto en materiales metálicos como en el titanio o poliméricos (poliamida). Los acabados y decoraciones de las monturas también han sido objeto de la investigación realizada en el proyecto.

        MID es un estudio de diseño interactivo y tecnología, especializado en ingenieria, diseño de interacción y new media. Está compuesto por un equipo multidisciplinar formado por diseñadores, ingenieros, artistas y programadores. En la práctica, esta combinación de creatividad multidisplinar e I+D permite diseñar y ejecutar proyectos singulares a lo largo de cada fase del proyecto. Fieles a la metodologia ad hoc, a partir de las necesidades del contenido, MID desarrolla la tecnología hardware y software adaptada a cada proyecto.
        El proyecto más reciente del estudio es BHOREAL, una interfaz de código abierto basada en la plataforma Arduino que permite controlar todo tipo de software y hardware mediante una superficie con pulsadores retroiluminados por LEDs RGB, que desarrollada usando técnicas de fabricación digital. Se puede utilizar como dispositivo OSC/MIDI para disparar samples en directo, como secuenciador, sintetizador, caja de ritmos, generador de mapas tonales o control remoto. También puede funcionar en modo autónomo como controlador algorítmico y generativo, simulador matemático, interfaz de juego y pantalla de LEDs de baja resolución, entre otras aplicaciones.

        The demonstration will introduce the participants to modern techniques of applying age-old materials to create emergent morphologies that transcend traditional processes. The workshop will focus on the process of spraying natural fiber to create a non-woven textile that can be used to produce anything from building components to ornamental artifacts.
        In case of a full workshop participants will take part in the fabrication process. After introducing them to the process, each participant will be able to fabricate their own object. The possibilities can range from something similar to a lampshade, a piece of clothing, or whatever they see fit.
        Participants will also be provided with their own set of blueprints of the spray tool so that they are capable of further developing the process on their own.

        This workshop is based on the work of: Jean Akanish, Alexander Dolan, Jin Shihui, and Ali yerdel - Stigmergic Fibers conducted for the Digital Tectonics studio at IAAC 2012-2013.

        "The Poppy project (http://www.poppy-project.org) aims at building an Open-source humanoid platform based on robust, flexible, easy-to-use and reproduce hardware and software. In particular, the use of 3D printing and rapid prototyping technologies is a central aspect of this project, and makes it easy and fast not only the reproduction, but also the development of morphological variants.
        Poppy responds first to the scientific objective to study the role of morphol- ogy in cognitive development, in particular for motor control and human-robot interaction. It appears today that a suitable design of a robot morphology can greatly simplify control problems, increase robustness, and open new modes of interaction with the physical and social world. Thus Poppy aims to enable and simplify the experimentation, the reproduction and the modification of the mor- phology in research laboratories. It also allows collaborative working, sharing and replication of the results on these issues between laboratories. The ambition is to become a reference platform for benchmarking and dissemination of scientific results.
        Thanks to its properties, this platform also meets a growing societal need: education and training in technology combining computer science, electronics
        and mechanics, as well as a training tool to the emergent revolutionary 3D printing process. With its openness, its design and its rather lower cost, Poppy provides an object and a unique context for experimentation and learning of these technologies in a Do-It-Yourself (DIY) approach.         Printhatship no sólo es un comercio de venta de impresoras 3D Open Source, en concreto la impresora Prusa I3 y componentes, se trata de una empresa de acompañamiento en la introducción de la fabricación 3D, realizando talleres de montaje, charlas acerca de la impresión 3D o bien participando en el desarollo de nuevas tecnologías como el proyecto ResinCat3D. Este proyecto trata del desarrollo de una impresa Open Source de resina en el que intervienen conjuntamente varios miembros del foro Clone Wars (referencia de la impresión 3D en España) en las instalaciones de Printhatshit de la calle Papin. El objetivo es conseguir una impresora económica, fácil de montar y que permita obtener unos acabados y definición en las piezas mucho más perfecto que con la actual Prusa I3.

        Esta empresa catalana comenta en su página web que “ la verdadera revolución acaba de comenzar, con la llegada de las impresoras 3D Open Source de bajo coste que han dado un salto al uso doméstico. Las posibilidades son infinitas...” Y en su apartado “Talleres”, afirma: “No importa que no se tengan conocimientos previos en el campo de la impresión 3D, Printhatshit enseña su funcionamiento, como configurar la impresora y como calibrarla”.

        Cunicode is a design studio and a brand of objects created using digital fabrication, created at the beginning of 2011 to identify new scenarios for creation, production and consumption based on digital fabrication, 3D printing and design.         Bernat Cuni, founder and designer, explains that “when there is a new fabrication method, there also have to be new design methods. Traditionally, fabrication was a privilege reserved for the elite, who had the resources (money, tools, knowledge and power) to build factories and distribution channels. Today,” he says, “in part due to the evolution of digital fabrication, these barriers are disappearing so that a larger number of people will have access to the means for production, creating new object typologies that have been unknown to the mass market because they weren’t economically viable given traditional production models.”

        Robots in Gastronomy is a research and design group focusing on the intersection of technology and gastronomy. The group includes Michelin Star Chefs, Industrial Designers, Interaction Designers, and High End Kitchen Equipment Distributors. The group’s research has culminated in the creation of the Food Form 1, a computer numerically controlled deposition robot capable of 3d printing edible materials.

        Robots in Gastronomy began in 2010 while Chef Paco Morales commissioned new custom dinnerware for his upcoming season. The plates and cups were geometrically complex, and were designed through iteration; each design was tested with its food to ensure the experience was unique. Because of this, the designs were prototyped using 3d plastic printers. This prompted the chef to ask, ‘Why can’t we just print the food?’

        This simple question caused the gravitation of several parties to form Robots in Gastronomy. Since then, the group has experimented with the concept of mass customization and how to provide that in different settings. The aim of the group is not to industrialize the kitchen, conversely, the aim is to provide tools of invention and innovation in the kitchen.

        Following several years of prototyping extrusion systems, Robots in Gastronomy completed work on the first version of the Food Form line of robots called the Food Form 1. The machine allows for the 3d printing of edible materials onto a variety of cooking surfaces such as a frying pan, deep fryer, anti-griddle, algae bath, or even onto a plate. The machine can be customized to custom dimensions or applications and is meant for experimental chefs, catering companies, pastry studios, or molecular gastronomists.

        LABS3D makes scale reproductions of real people. They recreate detailed replicas of actual people, using 3D printing.
        They use scanning and 3D printing technology. “It’s a revolutionary way to capture a moment in your life. A
        family portrait, a group of friends, a birth announcement or any kind of celebration: weddings, baptisms, communions.
        The possibilities are endless,” they affirm in this new studio, located at carrer Ample 12, in the heart of Barcelona.
        Using a scanning system, the details are captured with a high degree of precision. Once this stage is complete, the information is processed, the details are finalized and an exact digital image of the person is created. The next step is to transform the reality into an image through the use of 3D printing. And in a relatively short period of time, the person is immortalized in a figurine. The price varies according to the selected size and the person’s height.

        fotògrafa i dissenyadora de so, respectivament. Es tracta d’objectes petits, fets a mà, amb delicadesa i atenció al detall, des de la concepció fins a la selecció dels
        materials amb què estan elaborats.

        Les Tv’s estan realitzades amb materials naturals i en sèries limitades. La fusta, tallada en làser, està treballada en un petit laboratori de Barcelona, mentre que la imatge i l’àudio s’ha capturat als carrers de la ciutat. Les Tv’s estan pensades per alegrar diferents ocasions amb un toc creatiu; són una solució original per a un regal únic i personalitzat; un present per a convencions o trobades d’empresa.

        Stalactite 3D is a young start-up company founded in
        Barcelona. The project was launched by Joan Raventós
        nearly 3 years ago. His idea was to create high-performance
        3D printers that would be easy to use, providing
        high quality at an affordable price.
        For Stalactite 3D, a large part of the design inspiration is
        based on user needs and feedback from 3D printer users
        all over the world.

        Stalactite 102 is the first high-definition desktop stereolithography
        3D printer created at the Stalactite 3D offices.
        As a result of DLP technology and its operating system,
        the machine provides excellent results, similar to the
        major name brands, but at a lower price. It is a highly ergonomic
        and easy-to-use which means that users do not
        need specialized knowledge to calibrate the machine and
        begin printing. The machine’s z-resolution (height) reaches
        25 micrometers (0.025mm) and in the xy-plane it has two
        easily-adjustable resolutions: 100 and 50 micrometers.
        This level of technical quality allows for creating objects
        that could be confused with pieces made with plastic
        injection molding. Stalactite 102 has a printing area of 102,
        4x76, 8 mm on the xy plane and a height of 180 mm (z-axis).
        In addition, the printer can use up to 4 materials with
        different properties.

        ESARQ-UIC offers a teaching method based on design
        work at all scales and an integration of areas of knowledge,
        which ensures training highly competitive professionals
        with a multi-faceted, innovative, committed and
        entrepreneurial profile, who are capable of taken on new
        challenges. The students at ESARQ-UIC have access to
        a complete carpentry workshop supervised by specialized
        technicians, with a spacious area for hand work and
        assembly, in addition to CAD/CAM production tools. The
        workshop was opened in 2000, due to the creation of the
        Genetic Architectures Research Group and the Biodigital
        Architecture Master’s Degree. In the beginning, as the
        first digital manufacturing workshop at a Spanish architecture
        school or institution, it was equipped with a milling
        machine (CNC-AXYZ) and a 3D printer (Thermojet),
        later complemented with a CO2 laster cutter and two
        more 3D printers (ZCorp and Felix-printer), using additive
        layering and heated filament extrusion respectively, which
        are all still functioning to date.
        From the first year and through to the present, the main
        objectives have to do with the application of new digital
        technologies to the production of pieces on a scale of 1:1,
        for direct installation on site, in real architectural designs,
        beyond the creation of molds, models or mock-ups. While
        the importance of the machines is definitive in the creation
        of models, retrospectively the fabrication system
        defines the morphology of the design.

        The site encompasses an international research center in a privileged natural environment that brings together international students, teachers and researchers from different disciplines in order to advance the development of self sufficiency, recover ancient knowledge, manage local resources and implement new technology to solve problems of our time, to promote the exchange of this knowledge worldwide through information networks; generate economy and progress and lead research for re-naturalisation of cities on XXI century.

        A collection of our projects will be exhibited in the Green Fab Lab and a number of activities will take place during the Demo, including:

        At the beginning of all this; there is the fact that we identified a correspondence between the hacker ethic and African traditional societies values. LowHighTech concept is born to highlight this paradoxical closeness and make possible a new approach of technology; aimed at putting in the reach of all; including the poorest strata of society.

        Lowhightech finds its application at the urban scale in “HubCité”, a sort of african "smart city" project mobilizing barcamps and fablabs... Presented initially as an utopia, it is a program of urban renewal in which the actors are people who themselves - can easily take ownership and availability of dedicated spaces through technology to- recover the power to positively transform the city.         WoeLab has been established to serve this urban ambition but found a whole life outside of this first projection of the founder.         WoeLab is in fact a real neighborhood fablab, proximity incubator-accelerator  for boosting both open native hardware technology projects and international approaches of digital solidarity. A single framework for emulation, where young Africans through collective intelligence and free mentoring, access to the inventors status; chief of project and recently Corporate Head. Indeed, since recent months, we also prototype an innovative business. This young startups’ incubation program have an immediate success because 3 of the 5 companies we have created have been retained by the Governement in the top 10  entrepreneurial projects "of the year in Togo.

        But the most famous WoeLab’s project and the one that best embodies this LowHighTech philosophy is the W.Afate 3D printer in recycled materials. This is the first contribution of Africa to this 3D print technology and isn’t least with its qualities of ecology ; simplicity and economy.

        Microfluidics and Lab on a chip technology are introduced in high school curriculum in The Netherlands. A team of teachers, technicians and scientists developed an educational Lab on a Chip kit. The kit uses commercial, and partly custom made, glass chips.

        Current research is focused on low-cost substitutions for the glass chips, for educational use, using rapid-prototyping techniques.

        The first prototypes and procedures have successfully been developed and tested to demonstrate laminar flow.

The Sculpture is a complex geometry that seeks to combine the Modernist idea of the last century with a contemporary language of our Age, applying digital techniques at all stages of design, production and parametric adaptation, till the final setup in Steinplatz Berlin.

        African Fabbers is a social innovation and non-profit project promoted by Urban FabLab. The project is based on the idea of bridging the African and the European makers communities through workshops, collaborative projects, talks etc.

        African Fabbers has been selected to participate to both Marrakech and Dakar Biennale 2014. The project, curated by Paolo Cascone with Urban FabLab and Maria Giovanna Mancini, develops a temporary and itinerant fab lab putting emphasis on the open source hardware approach for sustainable technologies and urban ecologies. Therefore our Lab organizes free workshops dedicated to African and European makers, students and artisans selected by the local cultural institutions and by an open public call.         The talk aims to show how digital fabrication is modifying and implementing architectural design processes nowadays, through a graphic presentation which displays projects that are carried out in Fab Lab CEU, the Digital Fabrication Laboratory of CEU San Pablo University. The objective is not focused on the exhibition of projects that students develop in classes, but in the explanation of the processes that are conducted in the Fab Lab, allowing students to improve or implement their architectural designs thanks to the use of the digital culture (new technologies or advanced technological languages).

        In addition, as an open space, we will show how the Fab Lab offers students of different degrees of the university (Architecture, Telecommunications and Computer Science) a possibility to work together on the same project. We have also established links with research laboratories of the university, with whom we collaborate in the production of prototypes. This open-minded way has led, moreover, to collaborate with other academic institutions in the development of common projects, helping us to grow and improve our work processes, such as the participation in the Fab Academy Program or the workshops that we have developed in collaboration with ETH Zurich, TU Kaiserslautern, Politecnico di Milano, L’Ecole Speciale d'Architecture, LÉcole Camondó or Makeni University in Sierra Leone.

        Italian Limes explores the modern notion of 'border' within the context of the most recent technological advancements for spatial representation and the massive consequences of climate change that hit the Alpine ecosystem over the last decades.
        A network of GPS sensors placed on the Similaun glacier, which determines the border between Italy and Austria, transmit the collected data to a drawing machine in Venice Biennale.

        The development of GPS systems, as well as the representation of the collected data in the Biennale, have been developed in cooperation with Fablab Turin.

        An Arduino / Processing framework and some digital production instruments currently available in a FabLab allowed a little team to create working tools to survey and widespread data that are not usually available.

        The project has been awarded with a Special Mention at the 14th International Architecture Exhibition - La Biennale di Venezia, selected among the 41 installations on display at Arsenale's Corderie until November 23rd, 2014.

        MoMo, a Global Fab Award-winning initiative, attaches to infrastructure (e.g. water pumps, power lines) in the developing world and measures how well it is performing. It uses sensors to collect performance data and GSM to transmit the data using the mobile network. The hardware is modular, allowing it to support various communication channels (e.g. WiFi, Zigbee) or power sources (e.g. wall power, battery rechargeable by solar panel) with the same core components.

Seguint aquesta trajectòria al Convent Sant Agustí ha remodelat una de les seves sales per instal·lar el projecte Makerconvent. Un espai, on no només s'aprendran tècniques en disseny, electrònica, mecànica, robòtica, etc . sinó que també durà a terme projectes vinculats entre artistes digitals i el barri on s'ubica.Un makerspace on s'ofereixen una sèrie d'eines útils i assessorament professional per dur a terme el disseny i el desenvolupament d'idees d'una forma col·laborativa. Un lloc on crear obres amb audiovisuals, amb robòtica, amb una filosofia transversal basada en l'STEAM, creant una comunitat amb passió per la tecnologia, la difusió i l'aprenentatge. MakerConvent és una iniciativa dins del projecte europeu Formalab, que té com a objectiu principal el desenvolupament de la creativitat i les iniciatives d'innovació en nous projectes dins del nou moviment de la cultura i la fabricació digitals de proximitat .MakerConvent és un projecte dirigit a tots els públics, des dels més petits, els quals tindran tallers dissenyats a les seves possibilitats i coneixements, fins als més grans i emprenedors.

        Vertical Farming System (V.F.S.) applies to the quite common “blind” facade of a typical hi-rise apartment building in Athens. It works as a modular system with elements of 50x50 cm building a metal structure akin to a scaffold. The system shows great transformative power, functionally and aesthetically, and it may work as a pilot-project self-replicating through the city’s neighborhoods. Depending on scale V.F.S. may be used to grow herbs or vegetables and at the same time turn the ugly grey facades into green oxygen-fueled sanctuaries to biodiversity, long lost in Athens. Since the metal scaffold forms the basis, residents’ groups working together can decide what and where to plant. Recycled or other available material that comes handy may be used to form pots that can be filled with soil and placed drawer-like in selected parts of the grid. The structure is accessed by ramps that apart from their obvious functional use define an architectural promenade by offering new sights and unexpected viewing points all over the city.

        An example of a possible V.F.S. implementation on the terrace of an open-air theater on top of the VOX squat social centre in Exarhia, Athens, was presented at LAEMOS2014 in Havana, (2-5/3/2014).

        This talk explores 'kitchen becomes open,' a project by Valcucine, dotdotdot and Arduino. During the Milan Design Week 2014, Valcucine and dotdotdot, in partnership with Arduino, promoted a Call for Ideas directed to planners, designers, makers, developers and programmers working in the field of design, as well as students and enthusiasts. Everyone met to take part in a shared and collaborative project regarding Meccanica, a kitchen by Valcucine. During the 6 day workshop in Valcucine's store in Brera Milan, the designers worked in close contact with the company and were supported by skilled mentors to develop design suggestions and prototypes of new accessories, structures and interactive digital implementation in line with the mood and philosophy of Meccanica. All prototypes were made using the digital fabrication technologies available at the workshop and released under the Creative Commons BY - NC - SA 4.0 license.

        The results of the workshop were exhibited during the Milan Design Week 2014 in the Brera Design District.

        Through the introduction of case studies and scenarios in the field of wearable technologies, the talk will explores some issues at stake when the age of the “frictionless sharing” reaches pervasively our bodies. Rather than depicting the picture of a future Gattaca like society, we, conversely, aim to introduce a reflection on how open hardware, open software and open data, if developed in a coordinated sustainable ecosystem, could become a platform for the creation of alternative businesses wheareas the user empowerment, self-sufficiency and inclusion in decision-making processes are added values brought by the body borne products.

        This ETSEIAT aerospace vehicles degree final project is the study of the feasibility of the rapid manufacturing systems in the UAV applications. Reprap BCN 3D printer was the selected technology and the project develops a methodology for designing and manufacture a biodegradable PLA material UAV. Result is a new concept of fuselage in order to compete in weight with traditional tech and boom 100% 3D printing tech capabilities . Barcelona 3d printed UAV is 1500mm wingspan, 1000mm fuse length and only 845g OEW. Made in my home bathroom with CAD software under student license, 3D printer (740€) and 1 PLA filament coil (19€).

        Come learn about Slic3r from the inventor himself!

        Slic3r is the tool you need to convert a digital 3D model into printing instructions for your 3D printer. It cuts the model into horizontal slices (layers), generates toolpaths to fill them and calculates the amount of material to be extruded.

        The project was started in 2011 from scratch: the code and the algorithms are not based on any other previous work. Readability and maintainability of the code are among the design goals.

        Open City Prototyping explores how design, art, technology and rapid prototyping can serve as tools for civic participation.

        The Problem
        Cities are changing quickly and conventional planning processes are unable to keep pace. Permitting costs and timelines make creative public projects costly and difficult to implement, creating a barrier for citizens to contribute to improving the city itself.

        Our Solution
        Open City complements these processes by connecting cities and citizens with rapidly prototyped projects that improve civic life. We start by bringing together artists, designers, technologists, and civic innovators to collaborate on new projects. Dozens of prototypes are then exhibited where they can be tested in the real world by thousands of people. Then, we openly share how-to guides and code for every project through our Library so anyone can replicate the prototypes in their own city. Finally, our Program works directly with city agencies to identify the most promising projects and install them in the urban environment.
